Brother of Minneapolis City Council Member in ‘Critical Condition’ Following Stabbing Incident

The brother of Minneapolis City Council Member Jamal Osman is in critical condition following a stabbing incident in Minneapolis. In a Facebook post, Osman said that his brother is currently in the ICU. Osman said, “Yesterday afternoon my brother Liban was brutally attacked. He was stabbed in the head multiple times. After hours of surgery yesterday he is in the ICU currently and in critical condition.”

Osman, who is running for re-election to the Minneapolis City Council after being elected in a special election in Ward 6 last year, referenced the spike in violence in Minneapolis saying, “Too many families in the ward are victims to senseless violence, and now my family is among them.”

Minneapolis has been enduring a huge spike in violence, including homicides, as reported by The Minnesota Sun.

Previously, reported by The Sun, “A former member of the Minneapolis City Council painted a grim portrait of life in a neighborhood struggling with chronic lawlessness and virtually no police presence.”

Osman said, “The initial reports sound like the man who attacked my brother has mental health and substance abuse issues.”

Osman continued, “Minneapolis is full of people who are hurting. Hurting with the pain of a pandemic and isolation, lost jobs and opportunities, and so much more. If you need help please reach out and get it.”

Bring Me The News reported, Liban Osman, Jamal Osman’s brother, “was getting ready to pay inside the store when a man in a long-sleeved black shirt punch[ed] him and put him in a headlock. The fight continu[ed] outside, with bystanders intervening as the man slashed at Osman, holding him down so Osman could escape.”

Jamal went on to thank the police officers who responded, saying, “And to the Minneapolis Police Department officers and investigators working this case, thank you for your professionalism and dedication to the people of Minneapolis.”

No one has been arrested yet, as of Thursday afternoon, and two people have been treated at the hospital. Minneapolis Police Department spokesperson Officer Garrett Parten said, “We know who’s involved and the investigators are trying to determine what transpired. We were working to figure out who was the aggressor and what the altercation was about.”
